Byron was writing for an audience that would be more familiar with Greek, and so could be expected to pick up on the Zoe/life double meaning. I will say that if I were to translate the poem into French, I wouldn't translate the refrain as "Ma vie, je t'aime"; I'd leave it in Greek ("Zoe mou, sas agapo.").
